It is the leading opera and ballet house in the country. The theatre has been famous for its brilliant singers, dancers, conductors and stage-set artists. The world-famous Russian ballet actually started in St. Petersburg in 1738 by a French dance master Jean-Baptiste Landet and developed further in 19th-20th centuries by Marius Petipa, Sergey Diaghilev and Igor Moiseev. The corps du ballet of the Bolshoy Theatre is renown for the perfection of its technique and together with the St. Petersburg’s Mariinskiy Theatre continues to produce dancers capable to delight any sophisticated audience.
