EXPLORE MOSCOW → THE CHURCH OF CHRIST THE SAVIORThe Church of Christ the Savior is situated in the city center, not far from the Kremlin, on the high bank of the Moscow River. Built in commemoration of the glorious victory over Napoleon’s army in 1812, it was modeled on the Kremlin cathedrals of the Dormition and the Archangel Michael. Its size is enormous: it is 103m high, the central dome’s diameter is 25.5m, it can accommodate over 10000 people. In 1931 the church was exploded, later a swimming pool opened on the site. In 1990’s donations were made by thousands of people from all over the country and the church was completely reconstructed and in January 2000 opened for daily service on the original site.
