EXPLORE MOSCOW → THE KREMLINThe Kremlin is Moscow's heart, symbolically and historically. The oldest archeological finds on the Kremlin grounds date back to the Bronze Age. Signs o a small fortified Slavic settlement near the Moskva River date to no later then the end of 11th century. In 1366-1368, during the rule of Dmitry Donskoy a mighty white-stone fortress was built here. Later it was completely renovated: the white-stone walls were pulled down and replaced with the new works under the supervision of the Italian architects. It was then that the Kremlin acquired its present-day outlines, including the Cathedral of the Dormition (1475-1479), Cathedral of Annunciation (1484-1489), Cathedral of the Archangel Michael with the Bell Tower of Ivan the Great (1505-1508), the Faceted Palace (1487-1491).
