EXPLORE MOSCOW → ST. BASIL’S CATHEDRALIn the south side of Red Square rise the colorful cupolas of the most surprising masterpieces of the old Russian architecture: the Cathedral of the Intercession, better known as the Cathedral of St. Basil’s the Blessed. It was built in the 16th century, when after each major victory over the Kazan Khanate, a new wooden church was erected near the Trinity Church, which already stood there. By the end of the war, there were eight churches on this side, later re-built in stone. In 1588 the tenth church was added on the northwest side over the grave of Vasily (Basil) the Blessed, a “man of God” well-known in Moscow at the time. Basil gave the cathedral its second name, by which it is internationally famous today.
